An Interview with Kathleen

“People appreciate my attention to detail.”

Interior designer Kathleen Monteleone from NKM DESIGN with her husband Gerard.

Tell us about yourself

I have been married for over 30 years. I have two kids that are the light of my life. I like to exercise, travel and enjoy sitting on my deck with friends over a glass of wine. I have been an interior decorator for over 15 years. I love color, texture, fabric and enjoy putting it all together for my clients. I feel truly blessed at this time in life. I couldn’t be more grateful for the people I have met and have had the privilege of working with to create something beautiful!

When did you start your design business?

I was at a crossroads. My son was in elementary school and my daughter was starting kindergarten. I wanted to do something meaningful and creative. I had many compliments for my own homes and always had a good eye for design. I started my business in 2005 and never looked back. I’m lucky to work in an industry that I love!

What do you like most about owning your business?

The flexibility attracted me at first when my kids were young. But what I really love is the creativity it allows.

Receiving a design award from Jim Bugg Jnr at the annual Decorating Den Interiors conference. How has it changed your life?

I have met so many wonderful people. Clients, as well as the amazing designers in this industry. I have been able to travel to exciting places during our annual conferences and have been inspired by the breathtaking work of my peers. I honestly do not know what I would have been doing if not for my design business.

How did you get started in interior design?

I always loved color and texture. I had every subscription to every Design magazine available and would pore over the rooms designed cover to cover. I was fortunate enough to come across an advertisement for Decorating Den, and decided to contact them. The rest is history!

What type of projects do you prefer?

I love residential design. I love working with new home owners just starting out, or clients that need a refresh! Big or small doesn’t matter. We create a beautiful new space and delivery day is always exciting for both the client and for myself. Seeing it all finally come together is a very satisfying experience for all!

What are your personal favorite styles and why?

My favorite design has changed over time. I went from Traditional many years ago, to rustic modern in a neutral palette. I find the fabrics, textures and overall vibe, very calming.

What styles do your clients prefer?

Lately I feel they are leaning towards transitional or contemporary. Clean lines, neutral tones with a pop of color. I recently worked with a doctor. He was single and worked crazy hours. He wanted a quiet haven in which to relax. We created a new home office, family room, dining room and master bedroom. He was thrilled with the transformation and attention to detail we were able to achieve!

Describe your typical client?

Working couples who are busy and generally do not have time to shop and or make final decisions for their home.

What can a client expect from you?

A client can expect my full attention. I am always here to answer any question or concerns and I honestly work tirelessly to achieve their wants and needs in regards to the project. It is very personal when working with a client and their home. Trust is a huge factor and I want my clients to feel very comfortable throughout the process.

Why should a client work with you? What makes you different?

I try to make the process as easy as possible. I want them to love what I present and trust in their investment. I listen, I am diligent and I feel that I am very fair. Trust is earned. I want them to feel comfortable with my capabilities and with what they can expect at the end of the process.

How do you work with your clients. What is your process?

I offer a complimentary consultation. I will take photos and measurements of each space they want to design. We will discuss in detail their style and what they wish to achieve. This is used to gather information (not give advice), so I have a better understanding of their needs. I provide a HI/Lo estimate (as we work with many manufacturers and price points). This helps to establish a budget for the project. If hired I collect a retainer and start the research process (which takes anywhere from 10 days to 3 weeks), depending on the scope. When complete we will schedule a follow up appointment for the presentation.

Do you do a big reveal at the end of the project?

I prefer the client to be out of the space while we deliver the furniture or install window treatments. Depending on the scope honestly dictates the reveal. A full room design is always a lot of fun! I recently had a young couple in a new home. We did the family room, dining room and master bedroom. They were overwhelmed with the transformation!

A beautiful master bedroom to calm the soul.

Tell us about the best project you’ve worked on, and why.

I did a full home design for my best friend’s mother. She was a delight to work with and we were on the same page throughout the process. She loved the end result and how it all came together. We chose a neutral color scheme of grays, creams and blues. She loved the fabrics, multiple patterns and textures we put together in order to provide a harmonious flow from space to space. She appreciated the attention to detail, while provided everything on her “wish list.”

What do clients like about working with you?

I am very easy to talk to and want them to feel comfortable in reaching out to me with any questions or concerns they may have, during and after the installations.

What do you do in your spare time?

I feel that I do not have a lot of spare time. But when I do, I like to see friends from the neighborhood. We have truly been blessed with a multitude of wonderful neighbors who are not only supportive, but fun and easy to be around. I couldn’t be happier.

Do you work with any charities?

We support the ASPCA and Feed the Children.
